you guys are idiots. he means the focus has shifted from the instrumentalists to the vocalists, not that the vocalist doesnt play an instrument. instead of having a complex piece of music with vocals as icing on the top, music today has become cheap vocal work with a few chord changes underneath it. its ziggy stardust syndrome - the singer thinks they are more important than the band they rely on.

but i wouldnt entirely blame the singer. based on a lot of what i see today, most musicians probably dont have the chops to pull off a decent guitar solo. thats because the major record companies dont market whats good and technically complex, they market what they think will sell. and apparently, bands like we the kings sell like hotcakes.

dont blame the singer - blame the record companies that sign crappy musicians and the public that buys crappy music!

Because they are TOO LAZY and TOO STUPID to learn HOW TO READ MUSIC and HOW TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT.. but they are so ARROAGNT and DELUSIONAL they think they are just GREAT.

The don't realize that SINGERS are a DIME A DOZEN. They watch these reality TV shows where someone with NO TALENT and NO TRAINING can perform and, in some cases, even win.. and they don't see the 20,000 OTHER HOPFULS that LOSE.

In Nashville, at any one time, there are about 300 unemployed guitar pickers and OVER 3000 SINGERS looking for a job.

Have you listened to most modern vocals? Yeah, they aren't all that great, either.

Instead of just instrumentals being toned down, I think a lot of music is extremely simple now. People seem to have gotten away from a lot of complexity, failing to understand that complexity is what makes music interesting.

The other problem is the media. When, say, Miley Cyrus Personally, I can't stand her, but she /is/ very well known) performs, does the media /ever/ comment on music backing her up? No. It's all about Miley. No one ever talks about the band anymore, so singers don't think it matters if they tone down the music in the background.

Myself? I like listening to music with a good accompaniment. Singing music with a complex accompaniment? I'll admit that I find it a little bit intimidating, because I tend to get lost in the piano's part and struggle to find my own notes.

I agree with you. If you listen a song from the 50's, 60's, and some 70's songs you here a lot good things. There are a lot of instrumental solos, like the saxophones, and good harmonies. People could sing and play instruments back then. Now it sounds like someone threw something together. Most of them can't even sing anymore.

Why would a singer have a guitar solo? You mean like a singer that plays guitar? People still do that.

music changes over time. music styles etc.

but plenty of singers still play the guitar- kate voegele, coblie caillat, tyler hilton.

because they aren't very good at playing instruments
