Acoustic Guitars:

There are a number of hand made guitars from Collins, Froggy Bottom, McPherson, Olsen, etc.

Of the "name brands" the best are probably Martin, Taylor, Gibson, Takamine, Larrivee, and BreedLove.

Electric Guitars:

There are also some custom makers like Andersen.

Top "name brands" would include:

Gibson

Fender

Paul Reed Smith (PRS)

Schecter

Parker

Carvin

Godin

Gretsch

Jackson

ESP

B.C. Rich

Music Man

Those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head, so they're probably the more known ones, but I'm sure I've missed some.

Major brands (in no particular order) are:

Gibson

Fender

PRS (Paul Reed Smith)

Schecter

Ibanez

ESP

Jackson

Sub-brands:

Epiphone (Gibson)

Squire (Fender)

Charvel (Jackson)

The sub-brands tend to be much cheaper, but you don't always get the bells and whistles of the name brand models. Squire is the only one I would definitely avoid - Fender actually had Mexican made versions of its US models that are much better (the price falls in the middle - for example, my Mexican made Fender P-Bass was about $300, the squire is $150 or so, and the US model is about $900. The Squire plays and sounds like crap, while most people would have trouble differentiating between the US and Mexican models in a blind test.

Epiphone and Charvel actually make some guitars that rival their name brand models - there are some important differences though - for example, take a Gibson SG (think AC/DC) - it will have a 'neck-through' body, while the Epiphone counterpart will have a bolt-on, etc.

I generally recommend hitting pawn shops if you are on a tight budget. If you know any guitarists, have them examine anything you are thinking about buying - there are a lot of "GSO's" out there (Guitar Shaped Objects) and if you go on e-bay there are a ton of scams and knock-offs that aren't even worth the shipping. Again - if you see something you like on there, then try to get someone to take a second look for you.

Good luck - and have fun!

im a intermediate guitar participant and that i discover guitar hero video games extra complex than gambling the truly guitar. for one, you could have six strings on a guitar, in which as the sport has five buttons. the sport truthfully has you relocating your finger extra whilst you play unmarried notes than truthfully gambling truly guitar. in which a observe on a truly guitar would have you ever simply fretting a slash or higer string. the sport makes you be concerned a button that extra. i love gambling chords at the recreation. in that, it does believe like your truthfully gambling chords. one other factor is that you just dont fairly have got to seem at a reveal while gambling a truly guitar. so that you do want extra hand eye cordination to play the sport. the songs within the recreation are established lovely well. its now not simply random button presses, the sport does have repeatable styles. its defintely a laugh. its simply less difficult to play truly guitar.
