I'm looking for a good unique electric guitar under 500$. I don't really want to go the fender standard strat or epiphone les Paul route. I've been looking at hagstrom swedes, a few different deans (really like 1980 Cadillac), and a few different ltd esps, but I haven't been able to play any of them. I'm intermediate skill wise and tend to play mostly rock and blues. I def. don't want a jazz style hollow body or flashy lookin shred guitars. Any tips?

See if you can find a nice used Parker. They make very unique electric guitars and they play like you wouldn't believe (I own one and absolutely love it). I personally avoid Dean guitars like that plague. Yes, they look very unique, but they're just junk. The Parkers look unique and are a finely engineered instrument besides. I'd also bump up a vote for Eastman guitars and the Hagstrom Swede is a nice guitar as well, but I'd take a Parker hands down over any of them. Getting one for under $500 might be a bit of a challenge but they're out there if you shop around (I got mine for under $500 used on Ebay). Godin also makes some very nice guitars if you want another "non-standard" option. They can get a bit pricey too but you can find them under $500 if you shop around a while and wait for a good one.

Another +1 for Eastwood. I think the Stormbird is way cool.

+1 for Eastwood. They specialize in "retro" reproductions of guitars from the 50s and 60s but with modern guitar-building techniques and materials, and they have several options under $500 with a variety of pickups etc. You might take a look at models like the Sidejack, the Stormbird, or the Airline H44 or Airline Twin Tone.

Hello there,

Have you taken a look at the new Squier Vintage Modified Mustang, Jaguar and Jazzmaster. I got one of the Jaguars back in June. Mine is really nice. Best $300 guitar I have bought.

Check out some of the Eastwood guitars. They are rather "unique". Another "unique" guitar is Epiphone Wilshire. A little more mainstream would be a Fender Telecaster (Squire)

Unique means one of a kind, so I'd recommend building your own guitar from parts and doing your own custom finish. The website reranch.com has a lot of finish products and ideas. And you can get bodies, necks and parts from a lot of online retailers (I'm fond of Guitar Fetish) and eBay. If you build your own guitar, you'll be able to choose pickups (Guitar Fetish has a fantastic selection at really low prices) that suit your playing style and insert them in a body of your choice, whereas if you're focused on finding an unusual guitar body style, you'll probably be stuck with pickups that don't suit your music.
