How do play the piano by ear?
Ok, I am beginning to just learn how to play the piano and I just want to know, how can I play it by ear? I tried playing a song by ear but just couldn't do it. Do I get to do I get that when I get a little more advanced on piano? I know this guy who learn how to play piano by ear and I want to learn. I have a teacher and he is teaching me how to play the piano of reading the note(sight reading) and like I said, i'm new to playing piano. I can play my saxophone by ear very well, but not piano.

Most people who play piano by ear haven't been classically trained on the piano (lessons)...at least all the people I know haven't. You can still learn how to play piano by ear as well as take lessons. I would suggest maybe joining your jazz band at school once you're comfortable with the piano. Also something else to try is to get your ipod or just turn on some music you listen to and try to figure out the chords to the songs and then try to play along with it improvising a bit. If you don't know your piano chords ask your piano teacher to introduce you to them. Hope this helps and good luck! :-)

I was just like you before and I was told by my piano teacher that it is a very common problem for people who pick up the piano (or any other musical instruments) through note reading. See it as just a phase. The more you play, the more you practise, the more you listen to the sounds of the notes and the more you put your mind to it, the faster you will get over that phase. It really comes with practice. Good luck!

playing by ear is a natural talent either you have it or you don't, I play by ear, but it's not better than just learning. It's just another way of learning.
