Any name brand of bronze-wound steel strings for acoustic guitar will be OK. People tend to have brand preferences (I like D'Addario EJ-16's), but honestly, brand doesn't make a lot of difference. Light gauge is easiest on fingers and guitars, and should give all the volume you need in most cases (especially on an acoustic-electric). Phosphor bronze (as the wrap material) gives a slightly richer tone, 80/20 bronze (brass) a slightly brighter tone. If you have problems with strings going dead quickly, you can try coated strings like Elixers or the D'Addario EXP series - they cost more but last longer.

Personally, I and many others who regularly answer in preforming arts agree that Fender acoustics are generally mediocre in quality. Ibanez has a couple nice acoustic electric 12 strings for around that price that I think are much better guitars. Although it doesn't hurt to comparison shop, Guitar Center, much like Walmart has people brainwashed that they are the cheapest. They often aren't. Much of what they are cheaper on are special productions ran special for GC and Musician's Friend(same corporation for those that don't know) with corners cut to keep the price down. Sure, I do my homework on the MF website and then I go see the same music store I have been going to for over 35 years and ask the owner what he can do for me. The price is usually the same, or cheaper. If it's more by not much occasionally, I'll still buy from my local music store. I'm glad they're there. xx

Mmmm, not really a good idea. And Fender per say, is a cheap-o when it comes to their acoustics with any electronics built in. Best to have your fiance pick one out within reason. He knows what he is best suited for after he can try things out. Especially if he's been playing for a number of years. Would you allow him to go buy an evening gown, with matching jewelry, on his own without even asking or having to depend on a sales person and their taste in outfits? And $350 bucks isn't really much for an acoustic/electric of quality. You were kinda right in the reasoning on your own about the products. Live and learn. (Ahead of time though, take someone with you who is already into guitar playing to go take a look at all the stock these guys at the music stores have on hand. Secure a few ideas of the guitars available, information about performance, quality and price before having your significant other walk in and test drive.) Then you will be prepared. I rest my case.

Martin SP strings are my favorite followed closely by D'Addario EJ16 strings. I use the D'Addario strings on my Guild acoustic and the Martin SP strings on my Martin. Either would be good strings, but you really need to try out different strings to see which you like the sound and feel of. I prefer light gauge phosphor/bronze strings myself. A lot of people like coated strings like Elixirs, but I prefer just plain strings and I change them a bit more frequently (since coated strings cost 3x as much I can change mine every month instead of every 3 months and still have nice sounding strings), and I think they sound better without the coating.
