Question:
Craftsman Piano Tuning Lever can't flatten a string?

I received a beginner's piano tuning lever for Christmas and am learning to tune pianos. My tuning lever has a detachable head that screws on and off. The problem is, if I want to rotate a piano pin counter-clockwise (to flatten the pitch of the string), it simply unscrews the tip on my lever. So I can only use the lever to sharpen pitches, not flatten them.

My lever looks like it's a Craftsman Piano Tuning Lever:

Am I doing something stupidly wrong? Or am I really not able to flatten pins with this lever?

Hi,

You need a special wrench to tighten the tuning tip of the tuning head.

Get it on eBay

I answered the same question about a week ago - something you might have found if you'd used the Y!A search facility. The piano is both a chordophone (an instrument where strings produce their sound by means of sounding over a resonating chamber) and a PERCUSSION instrument. The strings of a piano are hit with hammers. Hitting is the criterion for percussion (irrespective whether it is a string, a piece of wood, a sheet of brass or a slice of other tuned metal which is struck). By The Lone Gunman's reasoning, a xylophone would be a woodwind instrument because it has wooden bars, and a gong would be a brass instrument because it is made of brass. By the same token a piano is NOT classified as a string instrument just because what is 'percussed' happens to be a set of tuned strings. So, yes, you're right - the piano IS a percussion instrument.
