theres almost always the full orchestra playing and of course the organ. I dont think its a pipe organ because they are HUGE and I just don't think it would fit...it Could be a church or a pipe organ. The other instruments in the Overture are, Violins, Violas, Cellos, basses, bass guitars, harp, flutes and piccollos, saxaphones (alto, tener and baritone) oboe, coe anglais, clarinets (bass and regular), bassoon, trumpets, trombones and of course the percussion (a lot of timphany and the others) oh yes and keyboards.
hope I helped!

It quite is dependent upon the creation, I might say. The huge theaters like the ones on Broadway and West End by and large simplest use one organ, considering the fact that the piece is written for just one organ. As for the company or 'sort' as you assert, That additionally relies. There are many quality organ manufacturers in the market. However if you are speakme of special varieties of pipe organs like church, symphonic, or theater, I'm going to mention a symphonic is usually used considering the fact that this is a very highlighted software via out the musical, nevertheless I understand for a proven fact that the LA creation and a pair different steady productions use theater organs.

The show has a large orchestra, consisting of 26 musicians; the show uses 17 instruments and multiple percussion instruments. The majority of the orchestra are string instruments, with large woodwind and brass sections; the percussion section is quite small. The show uses both 'classical' instruments and synthesizers.
The first half of the title song, "The Phantom of the Opera" is pre-recorded in stage productions because of the doubles that are needed to create the illusion of the Phantom and Christine traveling down to his lair. Once the lead actors appear, the recording is no longer used, save Christine's final, whistle register note.

The pipe organ part has always been a pre-recorded track. If you look close, the conductor wears headphones during this part to make sure he is on time when the orchestra comes in during the second half. At this point, the full orchestra plays along with the recorded organ part for the remainder of the song.

Mostly synthesizers, at least the shows I've seen. Maybe in theaters that are more accommodating they would have actualy organs, but I wouldn't be able to say.
