I also recommend the Snark clip-on tuners. I recently got one and it works great on my acoustic guitar.

You can also find guitar tuning applications online or for your iPod or phone.

If you have another instrument that stays in tune like a keyboard, you can tune your guitar to that. You need to know that the guitar strings from thickest to thinnest are tuned to E A D G B E. You just play the matching note on the keyboard and tune your guitar to it. Of course you need to know the notes on the piano to do that.

Just spend $20 for a tuner and you'll be much better off though.

If you want to do it for free, use a website like http://www.tunemybass.com. If you have a smartphone, there are free guitar tuner apps.

However, electronic tuners are very cheap these days. Pitch pipes are even cheaper.

It sounds like you may have a keyboard available, so you can just find the right notes for the strings and use that. http://www.vaughns-1-pagers.com/music/musical-note-frequencies.htm

DO NOT follow the recommendation to tune your A string to 440 Hz. You will break it. Actually 440 Hz corresponds to fifth fret on the high E string.

The easiest way to tune is at the fifth fret. On your low-E string (the biggest one) place your finger on the fifth fret. Play it and then play the A-string (the second biggest one) open. Bring those in tune with each other. When you're close play them simultaneously and try to get any wobble out of the pitch. E-string 5th fret and A-string open should sound identical. Repeat with the A-string 5th fret and the D-string open. Again, D-string 5th fret and G-string open.

Now here's the switchup. On the G-string play the 4th fret and the B-string open. Then B-string 5th fret and high-E string open. You may need to still make some adjustments here. Compare the 2 E-strings played simultaneously. Try to fine-tune all the strings so that everything is in tune.

Before you start it's good to make sure that your A-string is tuned to 440hz (or is otherwise tuned to the note A, so try to tune it with a keyboard or something like this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUvlamJN3nM
