I just want to put it out there, that you are not the dumbest beginner in the world. There is no such thing as one, because you are learning, so therefore, you are not dumb =). Anyway the term: E _______4__________ means to put your finger on the fourth fret of the E string. If the phrase was like this:

E _______4__________

B__________________

G__________________

D__________________

A__________________

e___________________

Than, it would be the top E string (The one below the pickups). However if the phrase was this:

E __________________

B__________________

G__________________

D__________________

A__________________

e________4__________

Than you would play the note on the bottom E string (The one before the pickups).

I would suggest to you to learn to read Standard Notation than Tablature (Tabs) because learning standard notation is a good habit of reading music, I consider tabs a cheating method of reading music, and I wouldn't really consider it a way to read music. But, none the less, you are a beginner so, do as you wish. But take my word, and learn Standard notation, you'll thank me for it later.

Capital E means the thickest string on the guitar.

Lowercase e is the thinnest string, all the way at the bottom.

Tablature is set up from top to bottom on paper:

E

A

D

G

B

e

This website will explain the standard method of playing tab.

A standard 'bar' of tab will look like this.

e----------------------------------------------

B----------------------------------------------

G---------------------------------------------

D----------------------------------------------

A---------------------------------------------

E----------------------------------------------

Hold the guitar as if you were going to play it, and then sit it on your lap facing up towards you; this is effectively what tab is trying to emulate.

For example, An 'open' C chord will look like this:

e----------------------------0--------------------

B-----------------------1-------------------------

G------------------0------------------------------

D------------2------------------------------------

A-------3----------------------------------------

E--0----------------------------------------------

Which, in explanation, means from the lowest pitched string of the guitar to the highest:

Open low E string (E)

Third fret of the A string (C)

Second fret of the D string (E)

Open G string (G)

First fret of the B string (C)

This tab also implies that the string are to be played one by one from the lowest string to the highest.

Tab is a great way to learn guitar, but please don't become buckled or attached to it in any way. Approach a teacher, or a friend with a good level of musicality and ask if they can teach you how to read standard notation. It offers information, such as rhythm and feel that tab cannot.

Good Luck and congratulations on choosing a great instrument.
