This website will explain the standard method of playing tab.
A standard 'bar' of tab will look like this.
e----------------------------------------------
B----------------------------------------------
G---------------------------------------------
D----------------------------------------------
A---------------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------------
Hold the guitar as if you were going to play it, and then sit it on your lap facing up towards you; this is effectively what tab is trying to emulate.
For example, An 'open' C chord will look like this:
e----------------------------0--------------------
B-----------------------1-------------------------
G------------------0------------------------------
D------------2------------------------------------
A-------3----------------------------------------
E--0----------------------------------------------
Which, in explanation, means from the lowest pitched string of the guitar to the highest:
Open low E string (E)
Third fret of the A string (C)
Second fret of the D string (E)
Open G string (G)
First fret of the B string (C)
This tab also implies that the string are to be played one by one from the lowest string to the highest.
Tab is a great way to learn guitar, but please don't become buckled or attached to it in any way. Approach a teacher, or a friend with a good level of musicality and ask if they can teach you how to read standard notation. It offers information, such as rhythm and feel that tab cannot.
