Ok so this is my first time buying me a guitar. I already have 2 of them but I didn't buy it someone else did and they're not nylon string guitars. I'm looking at getting the Yamaha ncx900 flamed maple. But I haven't tried it out yet, I'm shipping it to my guitar center to try it out and if I don't like it I'll get my money back. It costs $700. It has a englemann solid top, flamed maple back and sides. Somebody told me Yamaha guitars are no good. Well I think since its solid top and it costs $700 it should be pretty good. However I don't know much about classical guitars when it comes to buying. What strings come on the guitar? I know its nylon, but I mean what brand and what gauge?

Don't go by brand names. Whenever possible, actually try the guitar out first. Since this isn't the first guitar you've had, you already might have a preference in how you want your guitars to sound and feel to you.

There can be good Yamaha guitars, but they are still made out of wood and so there will be individual differences in each and every guitar even if they are made in a factory.

For $700, you can buy any number of good classical guitars. If you want a traditional classical guitar.

I took a look at the model you were considering buying and it is somewhat of a hybrid. Shaped like a cutaway guitar, it is designed to feel and play more like a steel-stringed acoustic guitar, but with a warmer tone characteristic of nylon strings. It's also an acoustic-electric model which offers flexibility for different situations if you plan to use your guitar for public performances.

Still, since Guitar Center is willing to let you get your money back if you don't like the guitar, it won't hurt to try the thing out. And while you're there, pick up and play any other guitars they have on stock in the same price range and see how they compare.

Guitar companies specialize in different parts of the price/quality spectrum. Yamaha is a very good brand for entry level guitars, which usually cost $150-300. They do not specialize in classicals over any other type. At $700 you're a ways outside their core area and should probably also be looking at brands that are known for their midrange classicals. Or you should get a less expensive (but still decent) guitar to start with and wait until you know more about it to spend this much money. The guitar you buy now is probably not the one you'll end up with, and used guitars only fetch half the new price.

Nobody really worries what strings come on a guitar. Strings are cheap and you change them at intervals. Many people change them immediately on a new guitar so that they'll have a fresh set of their favorite kind. Nylon strings don't come in gauges - there are high tension and normal tension, according to what works best for you and your guitar.

I own a Yamaha G-60A . I bought it at my uncle's store for $26.00 in 1967. There are no electronics on it. I've been playing it for 47 years. I think the sides and maybe the back is a laminate. The more expensive Yamahas are solid wood. I finger pick in a pseudo classical style and strum without a pick using my thumb and first finger. I bought the guitar to back up my singing. Over the years almost by accident I have become a decent guitarist. The guitar sounds great. It has a beautiful tone. I know that is no guarantee that every Yamaha will sound great but at least there is hope. Since you can return the guitar if you are not you have nothing to lose.

Nylon strings don't come in gauges..they come in tensions. High tension and normal tension and low/light tension.

Yamaha has always made good acoustics. Be it classical or Steel string.

There are many different types of nylon strings with different core materials in the wound and different winding materials. Silver , Brass, Bronze. even gold, I think.

The EAD strings are a core with winding and the GBE are nylon only.

You should look at Cordoba guitars which have much higher presence in that price range (and above). The C7-Ce is worth considering.
