Piccolo is a class of instrument, generally a smaller version of an instrument, usually an octave higher in range.

When used alone, "Piccolo" usually refers to the flute, but can apply to other instruments, such as the trumpet, clarinet, oboe, or even electric bass.

In the case of the flute, the performer would still be referred to as a 'flautist'.
