Question:
Which one, Bass or guitar, I can't decide!?

So, I'm 15, and I'm really pretty musically talented, I'm not the best, but I learn fast and I really love music. Now, I'm in a Zimbabwean marimba band (if you want to learn more about that or hear some samples, just email me), and the guy who also plays guitar for us sometimes is leaving for college after this summer, and I'd kinda like to step up and take his place.

There's a small dilemma though, I don't know whether to learn electric guitar, or electric bass.

I think that the bass, as an instrument, and in the way it's usually played, fits my personality much better than a lead-playing guitar: I'm kinda laid back and mellow, I'm a kind of quiet, shy person, I prefer to stay in the background, but at the same time do my own thing so that if people are paying attention, they'll notice me and see that I'm more "interesting" than most people. Also, I'd like to learn whichever one I learn before I go to college (sophmore in high school now, starting to learn the instrument this summer), and I think the bass would be easier for me to learn, or at least somewhat faster.

The guitar, however, is a much more popular instrument though, and a lot of people know how to play. Guitars draw a lot of attention, and are kinda on the forefront of the playing. I'm not sure if that's the best thing though, because in my band, the lead is always going to be a marimba, pretty much. I know that at least some girls think a guy who plays guitar is very sexy and dateable, and I'm kinda in the market for a girlfriend who would appreciate my music, so I'm kinda looking for the sexier instrument, at least as a factor in my decision, if not the deciding one.

so, my question for you ladies out there (or experienced guitar/bass players who would like to make a suggestion) is this: Which instrument should I try to learn, based on how attractive you think a guitar player vs a bass player is, the ease of learning the instrument, if you know, and any other factors that would influence your decision. Thanks a bunch for answering, or even visiting my question if you decide not to answer.

Hi, There are many guitar players, and you will be more respected if you are a good bass player, and people need bass players more than guitar players in bands. You will have a better chance of getting into a band, and be more respected if you play bass. Guitar is fun, but more people play it. The common choice is guitar. You can choose what you want, or play both! I would recommend playing guitar first and get really good, then you can play bass and have a better idea of the notes. Thanks, Ash

It's quicker to learn bass, so I think that would be in its favour.

And you said that the bass suits your personality more - It makes sense to me so far.

And what you said about which is sexier.. Well I'd be just as attracted to a bass player instead of a guitar player, so you don't need to worry.

Your music sounds interesting, good luck with it :)

Hope that helped a little bit

These days you can learn how to play guitar over the internet. Check out Mark McKenzie's guitar video lessons here: http://www.jamoramaguitar.com The videos are very easy to follow and to my surprise extremely helpful even for advanced guitar players. For beginners I would have to say this is a gold mine.

I was able to improve my skills in just under 4 weeks and I am an intermediate-to-advanced guitar player; I've been playing guitar for the past 6 years and I was on stage with my band a lot of times.

I live in New York City, I wanted to go to a pro guitar teacher but that would have cost me over $1400 per month. Good thing with this internet, $1400 it's a lot of money for me. Good luck!
