What do you intend doing with your instrument? If you want to accompany yourself singing in bars or similar, learn guitar. If you want to play melodies, learn guitar. If you want to be a bit different, learn Mandolin. Don't forget there's a whole family of Mandolin type instruments - Mandolin, Mandola, Octave Mandola, Bouzouki etc. and think about Tenor Banjo too. Why not just learn Fiddle? Then you'll be able to play anything tuned GDAE, ie, all the Mandolin family. And also learn guitar.

There is no shortage of tabs online for Mandolin.

I think guitar is better than mandolin because you easily get all the tabs for the songs you want to play on the net. I play guitar & it's very interesting. You get a wonderful music when you have learned it well. But that's my estimation...

You will find a greater variety of instructional materials for guitar. If you take up mandolin you'll find the available material heavily weighted toward country and bluegrass.

I play both and prefer the Mando. I like the sound and there is sheet music available. I have Beatles songs, even. I learned guiare first and mando years later. I guess it's what you are used to. Mando is different and smaller and easier to transport. Sound is great!
