a friend of mine had a Peavey rotor special and he has twisted the volume pot arond so much that he broke the connections, some other people have tried to mess with it and make it work but didnt do it correctly or with the right equipment. I want to fix it for him, but I need to know where the wires need to go because its a mess and I'm lost.

I am assuming you are talking about a guitar. There are a few ways that a volume control can be wired. If it is a single volume and tone set up then the normal way is as follows

#1 The hot lead coming from the switch goes to the first lug on the volume control.

#2 The ground wire from the pickup will solder directly to the back of the volume control (potentiometer housing)

#3 The third lug is bent back and soldered to the housing also (grounded)

#4 The middle lug goes to the tone control or to the output jack depending on the type of setup.

#5 the ground from the volume will go to the back of the tone control and then to the sleeve of the output jack (positive to the tip)

There are several websites that will give you general wiring diagrams but for the specific diagram for that guitar go to the peavey website

There is several possibilities! One is that a solder joint is bad and needs to have a soldering iron reapplied to get it to melt and make a better connection. Two, dust has gotten into the volume pot and if you spray with electronic cleaner it should clean it up. Lastly, it may not have been a very good volume switch and it is worn out and needs to be replaced. You may want to check the wiring to the switch to make sure it is not breaking off!
