Many students have trouble understanding the poetic language in which they are written. A good side by side modern English/original text edition of a play can be very helpful.

To watch Shakespeare performed on stage, even in a movie, takes concentration; and most people seek entertainment that does not involve too much thinking.

Most people want to relate to the story they are watching. It is difficult to relate to a story set hundreds of years ago, and in old English. It is more work than entertainment.
But since Shakespeare's stories are brilliant and timeless, Hollywood takes the same plots and places them in the modern world.

Many people believe that Shakespeare's language is too old fashioned (theyre too stupid to understand it). I however, enjoy his writing, and believe his plays are among the best.

They don't seem to understand the wording, and don't get what he's talking about. I can understand them, and think they're perfectly normal books with a different style.

Some people have different tastes in what entertains them. It could be anything, how overly dramatic they are, how long they are, ect.
